Root Canal vs Implants in Vancouver: Honest Insights from Hemlock Dental

Root Canal vs Implant: Many of our patients often wonder when to follow the dentist’s recommendation and whether the advised treatment truly serves their best interest

If I were to answer as directly as possible and in one paragraph, I would say

Tooth decay is one of the most common oral health problems that many people face. In its early stages, it can often be resolved with a simple repair and filling. However, if the decay progresses and leads to a deeper infection, a root canal may become necessary. Without timely treatment, the tooth may eventually need to be extracted.

Dentists always strive to preserve your natural teeth. But in cases where the supporting bone is severely damaged, saving the tooth may no longer be possible And in the end, this often leads to dental implants

At Hemlock Clinic, a trusted dental clinic in Vancouver BC, we’ve seen many patients who were previously told by other clinics that their teeth couldn’t be saved and required extraction, surgery, or complex treatment. However, after a simple examination by Dr. Farahnaz and our team, we were often able to restore their teeth with much less intervention.

Our sincere advice: always consult a specialist before making any decisions. It’s also best to visit a dentist as early as possible—acting in the early stages of a dental issue can make all the difference.

What Our Patients Say

I’m sharing the experience of one of our patients who visited Hemlock Clinic for a root canal in Vancouver BC last week, to help you feel more confident in your decision—especially if you’re unsure whether to choose a root canal or pull the tooth. You can also browse through our many reviews from over the years—something we highly recommend doing before choosing any clinic.

When Is a Dental Implant Necessary?

A dental implant is usually recommended when:

  • The tooth is broken or decayed below the gum line.
  • There is insufficient structure left to support a crown.
  • The goal is to prevent bone loss and misalignment of adjacent teeth after extraction.

When Is a Root Canal Necessary?

You may need a root canal when:

  • The cost and outcome of the procedure have been clearly explained.
  • The tooth can still be saved, and the infection hasn’t spread too far.
  • The patient understands that about 50% of root canals may fail within 10 years.

For an expert overview of root canal procedures, including benefits, risks, and step-by-step steps, see the MedlinePlus Medical Encyclopedia: Root Canal – MedlinePlus. This government-backed source offers reliable, patient-friendly information.

Comparing Dental Implants and Root Canals

Aspect Dental Implant Root Canal Treatment
Success Rate 5–10% chance of failure, even after several months or years May not always succeed in saving the tooth
Cost Often not covered by insurance; full cost must be paid Relatively high, but less than implants; often covered
Treatment Duration Takes between 3 to 18 months for full recovery May take longer if infection is present
Invasiveness Risks include infection, damage to adjacent teeth, jaw fracture Possible weakening of the tooth
Number of Visits 3 to 10 sessions 2 to 3 sessions for complex cases

Both options have pros and cons. A root canal is generally less expensive and faster, making it a good choice for those with time constraints or insurance coverage. An implant, while more costly and invasive, offers superior longevity and aesthetics.

Root Canal vs Implant: Which Is More Painful?

Patients often ask, “Which is more painful: a root canal or an implant?” Root canals can feel more uncomfortable due to the extended treatment and multiple appointments. On the other hand, implants tend to cause more discomfort after the extraction phase but heal gradually.

Which is healthier root canal or implant

As mentioned earlier, both methods are appropriate and healthy, depending on the condition of your teeth. Implants are often suitable when the bone has eroded, and the tooth cannot be saved, while root canals are ideal when there is still a chance to preserve and maintain your natural teeth

Which is more painful root canal or implant

When patients ask which is more painful root canal or implant, dentists explain that the two procedures feel different rather than one being “more” or “less” painful. A root canal might feel more uncomfortable while it’s happening because it often takes longer and sometimes needs multiple visits, even though modern numbing keeps pain under control. On the other hand, a dental implant doesn’t bother patients much during the surgery, but they might feel sore and more uncomfortable after the tooth comes out and the implant goes in, as the bone and gums need time to get better. Generally speaking, with good numbing, medicine, and expert care, patients can handle both procedures well. So, the choice should depend more on the condition of the tooth and long-term mouth health than on worrying about which one, root canal or implant, will hurt more. FAQs

Is a root canal painful?
Modern root canals are usually no more uncomfortable than getting a regular filling, because the area is numbed with local anesthesia.

How long does a dental implant last?
With good oral hygiene and regular checkups, dental implants can last many years, often decades, and sometimes even a lifetime.

How do I know if I need a root canal or an implant?
Our dentist examines your tooth and takes X‑rays to see if the tooth can be saved with a root canal or if it is too damaged and better replaced with an implant. Contact us now.

Is a root canal cheaper than a dental implant?
In most cases, a root canal followed by a crown costs less upfront than removing the tooth and replacing it with a dental implant.

I had a dental emergency. The dentist cancelled her own lunch to accommodate me (she never told me this but the front desk confirmed it). The dentist listened to my concerns and expertly fixed the problem. Honestly, I would give more than 5 stars if I could. I'm really grateful!

The first time I visited this clinic I showed up when they were closing, Zhina kindly let me in and Dr. Alavi checked my teeth patiently. After that, Dr. Alavi and her great assitants Maryam and Anandi, fixed my prolonged and difficult teeth problem in several very pleasant appointments. Dr, Alavi's skill and expertise are impeccable and most importantly, she really cares about her patients. Niki also always goes out of her way to help me out, doing extra work to make sure I get the best for my teeth, she also speaks madarin! Pendar is good at cleaning teeth too. Can't wait for my teeth to rot and I can give this great clinic another visit! ha

Excellent dental care. The male hygienist is friendly, professional and relaxed. Front desk staff and the dentist are wonderful. Prices align with the B.C. fee guide. They make sure that insurance is billed correctly. So happy that I switched to this dentist a couple of years ago.
