What Is Dental Filling?

A dental filling is a quick, effective way to restore a decayed tooth categorized as general dentistry. It replaces the damaged part with a strong material—sealing the tooth and preventing further decay. With expert tooth fillings in Vancouver, you get your smile back—stronger and healthier.

Types of Tooth Fillings

There are different types of dental fillings in Vancouver and you can look for the one that matches your needs, budget, and smile goals. Vancouver BC dentists provide you the best solution for your needs.

  • White Fillings (Composite): Blend naturally with your teeth. Ideal for visible areas.
  • Silver Fillings (Amalgam): Teeth silver filling is durable and cost-effective, often used for back teeth.
  • Gold/Ceramic Options: Premium choices for strength and longevity.

Composite vs. Amalgam – What’s the Difference?

When it comes to dental fillings, the choice often comes down to appearance vs. durability.

  • Composite fillings blend in with your natural teeth, making them a popular aesthetic option. They’re slightly less durable and usually cost a bit more.
  • Amalgam fillings, the classic silver option, are stronger and more budget-friendly—but they’re also more noticeable.

Choose what fits your smile and your priorities, and if you need amalgam fillings removal, contact Hemlock Clinic , a Vancouver endodontic centre.

Do You Need to Replace Your Silver Filling?

Old silver fillings (amalgam) can crack, leak, or separate from the tooth over time. Watch for signs like tooth sensitivity, visible cracks, or dark edges.

If your filling is worn or damaged, silver filling replacement is recommended to avoid deeper decay or tooth fractures.

What Is a Black Filling and Why Does It Happen?

A black filling on a tooth might be a dark-colored composite or a sign of discoloration. However, dark spots can also mean decay under the surface.

If your black filling changes color or the tooth feels sensitive, it’s best to have it checked—it might be time for a replacement.

Aftercare Tips: What to Know After a Filling

Taking care of your tooth after a filling helps prevent complications and supports healing. Follow these essential tips:

What to Do After a Filling

  • Eat soft, easy-to-chew foods for the first 24 hours—think yogurt, mashed potatoes, scrambled eggs, soup (not too hot), oatmeal, bananas, and smoothies.
  • Mild sensitivity to cold, heat, or pressure is common and can last up to 1–2 weeks. A desensitizing toothpaste can help.
  • Avoid chewing on the numb side until full sensation returns to prevent biting your cheek or tongue.
  • Brush and floss gently—keep the area clean, but avoid vigorous brushing around the filled tooth for the first 24 hours.
  • Rinse with warm saltwater (½ tsp salt in 1 cup warm water) if your gums feel sore or inflamed.
  • Monitor your bite—if your filling feels “too high” or causes sharp pain when chewing, contact us for a quick adjustment.
  • Do not take painkillers or anti-inflammatories unless prescribed by your dentist. Overusing OTC medications can mask symptoms or cause unwanted side effects.

What to Avoid

  • Hard foods (nuts, popcorn, ice)
  • Sticky or chewy snacks (gum, candy, dried fruits)
  • Very hot or very cold drinks in the first 24 hours
  • Smoking or alcohol, which may irritate healing tissue

I had a dental emergency. The dentist cancelled her own lunch to accommodate me (she never told me this but the front desk confirmed it). The dentist listened to my concerns and expertly fixed the problem. Honestly, I would give more than 5 stars if I could. I'm really grateful!

The first time I visited this clinic I showed up when they were closing, Zhina kindly let me in and Dr. Alavi checked my teeth patiently. After that, Dr. Alavi and her great assitants Maryam and Anandi, fixed my prolonged and difficult teeth problem in several very pleasant appointments. Dr, Alavi's skill and expertise are impeccable and most importantly, she really cares about her patients. Niki also always goes out of her way to help me out, doing extra work to make sure I get the best for my teeth, she also speaks madarin! Pendar is good at cleaning teeth too. Can't wait for my teeth to rot and I can give this great clinic another visit! ha

Excellent dental care. The male hygienist is friendly, professional and relaxed. Front desk staff and the dentist are wonderful. Prices align with the B.C. fee guide. They make sure that insurance is billed correctly. So happy that I switched to this dentist a couple of years ago.
