All You Need to Know About Digital Dental X-Rays

Digital dental X-rays are a rapid, safe, and precise method of looking at  what is going on within your teeth and jaws, and they are one of the primary services of general dentistry services at Hemlock Dental Clinic in Vancouver. They are low radiation, have clear images, and aid in early diagnosis of problems by Dr. Alavi, and make her plan comfortable, conservative treatment. If you need quick help, fill out the form on this page or contact us now at  604-738-9202.

What Are the Digital Dental X-rays?

Digital dental X-rays are X-rays that are captured using an electronic dental x ray digital sensor rather than using film, after which they are instantaneously shown on the computer screen. They reveal the teeth, roots, and bone in detail and assist your dentist in discovering problems that are not seen through an oral comprehensive exam alone.

Hemlock Dental Clinic provides digital X-rays in general dentistry treatment like comprehensive examination, dental fillings, root canal treatment, and emergency dentistry in Vancouver. This technology will help Dr. Alavi to make correct diagnoses and maintain visits efficiently and comfortably by dental x rays digital.

What Can Digital X-rays Detect?

Digital dental X-ray in Vancouver enables the identification of underlying issues at an early stage, usually even before you notice that something is wrong. They may demonstrate:

  •   spaces between teeth
  •   tooth root infections
  •   loss of bones due to gum disease
  •   impacted or wisdom teeth
  •   alterations in the jawbone or sinus areas

These photos are also used in planning fillings, root canal treatment, extracting, implants, and other general dentistry in Hemlock Dental Clinic Vancouver where they are used along with a full oral examination to design an individualised care plan. Fill out the form on this page now to reserve a quick appointment.

How Do Digital Dental X-rays Work?

You put a small digital sensor in your mouth or just outside and a beam of X-rays is focused upon your teeth and bone, forming a detailed picture on the computer screen. The sensor is very sensitive, hence it does not require a lot of radiation as compared to the old film X-rays. Your dentist is able to increase the zoom, contrast the images, and look through them with you at the chairside and it is easier to explain why you may need basic dental fillings Vancouver or more serious treatment.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Digital Dental X-rays

Here are pros and cons of digital dental X-Rays:

Benefits Disadvantages
Radiation & safety Much lower radiation dose (about 80–90% less than film), safer for all ages. Still a small amount of radiation, so X-rays should be taken only when needed.
Speed & efficiency Images appear instantly, helping your dentist diagnose and plan treatment in one visit. Fast and easy imaging can make some patients worry about frequency, even when doses are low.
Image quality Clear, adjustable images make it easier to spot decay, cracks and bone changes early. One type of X-ray cannot show everything; different views may still be needed.
Records & cost Secure digital storage and comparison over time help track healing and avoid repeat or unnecessary treatments, supporting more affordable care. Technology costs mean patients should choose a clinic that uses X-rays wisely and only when justified.
Comfort Quick exposures and adjustable positioning improve most patients’ comfort. The sensor can feel a bit bulky or uncomfortable, especially for back teeth.

At Hemlock Dental Clinic, the team uses the minimum number and type of X-rays required to safely diagnose and treat your dental concerns. Contact us now to reserve your time.

Types of Digital Dental X-rays

The various digital X-rays are utilized in different applications:

  •  Biteswing X-rays: This examines the crowns of upper and lower teeth and the height of the bone, best used to identify the presence of tooth cavities and early gum disease.
  • Periapical X-rays: The entire tooth, including the crown and root, is depicted together with the surrounding bone and can be utilized in root canal issues, abscesses, or fractures.
  • Occlusal X-rays: A larger portion of the jaw is taken to examine the position of the teeth, growth issues, or some lesions in the jaw.
  • Panoramic X-ray (extraoral): This allows a visualization of all the teeth, jaws, jaw joints, and sinuses in a single broad image, commonly applied in wisdom teeth, orthodontic planning, and implants.

Digital Dental X-rays: Safety, Uses, and Pregnancy

Modern sensors in the digital dental X-rays in Vancouver form easy-to-read pictures with a significantly reduced dose of radiation (up to 80-90 percent less than film). The number of X-rays is determined by your risk and condition of the mouth, so they are scheduled at the discretion of your dentist, as few as you need to determine the course of action such as fillings, root canals, extractions and implants and at Hemlock Dental Clinic are only taken when the benefits of the X-ray are evidently greater than the small risk of the radiations.

When pregnant, regular digital X-rays of the teeth are normally avoided unless there is pain or infection or trauma, and when it is necessary, the aimed beams and shielding ensure that exposure is minimal. Our dentist explains all the risks, benefits, and further actions to you.

If you have tooth pain, sensitivity, or a broken filling, schedule an emergency visit so Dr. Alavi can use digital X-rays to find the cause and treat it quickly. Contact us now.

FAQ

Are digital dental X-rays safe?
Yes. In modern digital dental X-rays, the radiation dose is very low and may be much less than that in traditional film, and is considered to be safe when used in line with the professional guidelines.

How much radiation is in digital dental X-rays?
One digital dental X-ray typically exposes you to a small amount of a millisievert (0.005-0.01 mSv) of which you could have gotten in a day or two of natural background exposure.

How often is it safe to get dental radiographs?
It does not have a certain number; your safe frequency varies with age, oral health, risk of tooth decay, and dental history. We will also customize your X-ray schedule so that you receive the X-ray of your images you require.

Can I refuse dental X-rays?
You are allowed to refuse, but your dentist can have little information and can even fail to diagnose or treat some issues safely. It is advisable to speak up about your worries.

Can I have dental X-rays while pregnant?
Routine x-rays are normally avoided in the course of pregnancy except in the case of an emergency. Your dentist may advise a digital X-ray with the necessary precautions in case it is necessary to your health.

Do digital dental X-rays hurt?
The X-ray itself is painless; you may only feel slight pressure from the sensor or positioning device in your mouth for a few seconds

How do you take digital dental X-rays?
The dental team places a small digital sensor in your mouth, positions the X-ray unit beside your cheek, and activates it from a safe distance while you stay still for a moment. The image appears almost instantly on the computer screen, so the dentist can review it with you in real time.

I had a dental emergency. The dentist cancelled her own lunch to accommodate me (she never told me this but the front desk confirmed it). The dentist listened to my concerns and expertly fixed the problem. Honestly, I would give more than 5 stars if I could. I'm really grateful!

The first time I visited this clinic I showed up when they were closing, Zhina kindly let me in and Dr. Alavi checked my teeth patiently. After that, Dr. Alavi and her great assitants Maryam and Anandi, fixed my prolonged and difficult teeth problem in several very pleasant appointments. Dr, Alavi's skill and expertise are impeccable and most importantly, she really cares about her patients. Niki also always goes out of her way to help me out, doing extra work to make sure I get the best for my teeth, she also speaks madarin! Pendar is good at cleaning teeth too. Can't wait for my teeth to rot and I can give this great clinic another visit! ha

Excellent dental care. The male hygienist is friendly, professional and relaxed. Front desk staff and the dentist are wonderful. Prices align with the B.C. fee guide. They make sure that insurance is billed correctly. So happy that I switched to this dentist a couple of years ago.
