How Long Does a Root Canal Take? Recovery & Longevity

Learn about root canal recovery time, healing timeline, and a real wisdom tooth extraction story from Vancouver’s trusted dentist, Dr. Alavi.

Many patients ask, “How long does a root canal take?” it depends on your tooth’s anatomy, the extent of infection, and your body’s healing capacity. On average, a root canal procedure lasts 30–90 minutes, but recovery and full restoration can take several days.
At Hemlock Dental in Vancouver, our endodontic specialists use advanced rotary systems and digital imaging to complete root canal treatments efficiently and ensure lasting results.
This article explains the complete healing timeline, factors affecting recovery, and how long your treated tooth can last after the procedure.

  • For step-by-step eating, hygiene, and do’s & don’ts right after treatment, see our root canal aftercare guide.

How Long Does a Root Canal Take?

A root canal usually takes 30 to 90 minutes, depending on how many canals your tooth has.

  • Front teeth (incisors): ~30–45 min
  • Premolars: ~45–60 min
  • Molars: up to 90 minutes due to 3–4 canals

A clinical study on non-surgical endodontic therapy reported an average treatment time of around 90 minutes in many cases. PMC The research further showed that preoperative pain, multiple visits, and the operator’s experience significantly influence the total procedure duration.

Some treatments are completed in a single visit, while others may need two appointments to thoroughly disinfect the root canals before sealing.

If your tooth pain persists or swelling hasn’t subsided, book a root canal evaluation at Hemlock Dental in Vancouver for a personalized treatment plan.

Additional Elements That May Extend Your Root Canal Procedure

  • Infection and swelling: If there’s a significant infection or abscess, your dentist may need to clean the area and apply medication before completing the procedure.
  • Tooth anatomy: Extra or curved canals can increase treatment time.
  • Restorative work: Adding a crown or other restorative work might be scheduled as a follow-up visit.
  • Specialist care: If you’re referred to an endodontist in Vancouver, they might follow a different timeline for precision and care.

Why Do Root Canals Sometimes Take Two Visits?

Two-visit treatments are often recommended when there’s:

  • Persistent infection requiring intracanal medication
  • Severe dental pain after root canal
  • Complex root structure that needs more time to clean

It’s not a sign of a problem — just a cautious, thorough approach to ensure long-term results.

If pain doesn’t improve, contact your dentist to prevent problems and check for failed root canal symptoms.

Factors Affecting the Duration of a Root Canal Treatment

Several biological and procedural factors influence treatment and recovery time:

  • Tooth anatomy: Complex roots and accessory canals require longer cleaning.
  • Infection level: Acute abscesses or necrotic pulp delay healing.
  • Systemic conditions: Diabetes, autoimmune disease, or smoking can slow tissue repair.
  • Dental technology: Modern rotary instrumentation and apex locators reduce chair time and improve outcomes.
  • Operator skill: Experienced endodontists achieve faster healing with fewer complications.
  • Dental technology / Device generation: Use of newer generation EALs (electronic apex locators) is associated with shorter and more accurate working length determination. PMC

A 2021 study in BMC Oral Health confirmed that cases managed with digital apex locators had significantly shorter healing times compared to conventional methods.

Timeframe for Multiple Root Canals

If you require multiple root canals, they may be scheduled across several appointments to avoid long treatment times in one sitting. Your general dentistry clinic will assess your comfort and adjust the treatment plan accordingly.

How Long Does a Root Canal Take to Heal?

Root canal healing time varies, but most patients recover within a few days to a week. Mild discomfort or sensitivity is common during this period. You can manage this with over-the-counter pain relief and by following your dentist’s care instructions.

If you’re experiencing prolonged dental pain after root canal treatment, it may be a sign of lingering infection or complications. Contact your dentist promptly.

H2: How Long Does It Take to Heal After a Root Canal?

Healing after a root canal is gradual and influenced by your body’s inflammatory response.

Healing Stage Timeline Symptoms Recommended Care
Immediate (0–24h) Numbness, mild soreness Avoid chewing hard foods Rest, cold compress
Short-term (1–3d) Decreasing tenderness Mild pressure discomfort OTC pain relief if needed
Medium (4–7d) Minimal discomfort Sensitivity fading Resume light chewing
Full (2–3w) Tissue fully recovered Normal function restored Maintain oral hygiene

Pain typically subsides by 72 hours, while residual sensitivity may persist up to two weeks in some patients.

If you experience persistent pain beyond 5 days, contact Hemlock Dental in Vancouver, and our team can ensure your healing is on track and pain-free.

How Long Should a Root Canal Last?

When properly restored and maintained, a root canal-treated tooth can last 10–20 years or even a lifetime.

A survival rate of 91% after 10 years, especially when a full-coverage crown was placed soon after treatment.

Longevity depends on:

  • Quality of final restoration (crown or onlay)
  • Post-treatment hygiene and routine checkups
  • Avoiding recontamination (e.g., cracked fillings, gum disease)
  • Lifestyle factors like smoking or bruxism

Protect your investment. Schedule a post-treatment crown fitting at Hemlock Dental in Vancouver to extend the life of your root canal.

If you’re comparing root canal vs implant, keep in mind that saving your natural tooth is almost always the preferred option, when possible. Implants are excellent alternatives but may involve longer recovery and higher costs.

I had a dental emergency. The dentist cancelled her own lunch to accommodate me (she never told me this but the front desk confirmed it). The dentist listened to my concerns and expertly fixed the problem. Honestly, I would give more than 5 stars if I could. I'm really grateful!

The first time I visited this clinic I showed up when they were closing, Zhina kindly let me in and Dr. Alavi checked my teeth patiently. After that, Dr. Alavi and her great assitants Maryam and Anandi, fixed my prolonged and difficult teeth problem in several very pleasant appointments. Dr, Alavi's skill and expertise are impeccable and most importantly, she really cares about her patients. Niki also always goes out of her way to help me out, doing extra work to make sure I get the best for my teeth, she also speaks madarin! Pendar is good at cleaning teeth too. Can't wait for my teeth to rot and I can give this great clinic another visit! ha
